The alder needs very moist earth and therefore grows mainly in the vicinity of water. Alder is a very soft and relatively light wood with moderate moisture movements. It is easy to process, giving low wear on tools. Immediately after felling, the wood has a yellow or reddish-white colour, which gradually darkens to a light red-brown.
